Structural Racism and Public Health

Over the past several weeks, we have witnessed extreme acts of racism occurring across the country, including the violent death of Mr. George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement.  We recognize that this is not an isolated event and that deep structural racism has existed in our nation for hundreds of years. Such racism is a public health crisis with devastating impact on communities of color, resulting in great disparities in health outcomes.

As emergency physicians, we are committed to providing high-quality, compassionate, unconditional care to all who come through our emergency department doors. We must also strongly commit more broadly to the promotion of health equity within all communities and the condemnation and dismantling of structural racism within our society. As emergency physicians, we have the opportunity and an obligation to promote the health and well-being of all communities and we pledge to do so.  Please click the link below to view ACEP’s statement on Anti-racism which our chapter supports:
